Last night I was in the recording studio for a few hours overdubbing some tracks for my brother Dan’s upcoming Christmas album. It was fun. The room has a great vintage Neve console with faders from here to Timbuktu.
This record is going to be good. I don’t know if it even has a name yet, but it’s kind of a folk/pop thing with moody guitars and interesting solos and arrangements.
I mostly played shakers and cymbal rolls, which I believe is called “sweetening” in the studio world.
Here are a couple of pics.

Well I’ve gone and bought some new drummies. I decided that instead of socking money under the mattress, I would invest in acoustic instruments. Hopefully it’s a good idea. Not sure what Suze Orman would say, but I can’t worry about that now!
Here is a pic of me and my new pal Derwood Lesh. He brought the drums all the way from Rhode Island to St. Louis. Happily it wasn’t a special trip–he was en route to Texas and I was on the way.
The drums are vintage Ludwig Dresdens in fine condition. I played on these drums (not the exact drums, but this brand) back in the day in Evansville and Owensboro. Though a bit quirky, they are nice sounding drums with suspended bowls and a clutch pedal.

Working as I do at a university, I have been on Facebook for a couple years and for most of that time I ignored it; I think I had about four “friends.” In the last week or two I’ve noticed something interesting: a lot of people have been inviting me as friends. It’s like everyone of a certain age has discovered social networking at the same time.
Once they’re on board, people who knew them from back in the day find them and the race is on. I must say I get a kick out of adding a friend whom I dimly remember from school or an early job. Oh yeah, THAT guy! FB is kind of an interesting window into one’s soul, depending on what people have posted. It can also be a bit of a time hole, so beware!
