Last week I had the pleasure of welcoming my old friend Todd Sheehan to the Basement. I hadn’t seen him in quite a few years though we have communicated electronically quite a bit. Todd has my old gig as timpanist in the Evansville (IN) Philharmonic. (Notice how I indicated the state in which Evansville resides. There is, I believe, an Evansville in Illinois, though I doubt they field an orchesta.)

We cooked out on the patio as custom requires in late spring and then went down to a hipper neighborhood to catch another old friend, Peter Mayer and his band. All in all it was an outstanding reunion that I look forward to repeating in the not so distant future.

This week marks the end of the season for the SLSO and my humble contributions thereto. The piece is the mighty War Requiem of Benjamin Britten. I’m playing a lot of bass drum and a few other things. It’s really a great piece, one that I hadn’t played before but am enjoying quite a bit in the long spells between pounding.
Greg Cohen is on the gig as another extra drummer. He plays regularly in San Diego but lives in St. Louis at least part of the time. We went out for Thai food between rehearsals and ran into John Kasica, our fearless section leader. A good (and spicy) time was had by all.
